Transgender and Intersex Africa needs your help !

Transgender & Intersex Africa, a newly formed group needs your help. Please read the letter below. Please forward this information to your own networks.

Subject: Transgender and Intersex Africa in kind support proposal

Background

Transgender and Intersex Africa is an organisation that has been initiated by black transgender individuals to focus on black transgender and intersex issues in South Africa. Our aim is to break the silence and stop ignorance about the existence of the black Transgender and Intersex community in South Africa especially in the rural areas and black townships. We also want to bring the knowledge of applicable terminologies and a better understanding of the condition, however not dismissing the indigenous knowledge of African transgender and intersex identity.

Transgender and intersex Africa strikes to support transgender and intersex individuals with safe spaces to debrief and share necessary information with one another. We strive to raise awareness through education and training to the transgender and intersex community, their families and general society about black South African transgender and Intersex existence and issues. This is to allow our African culture to overcome the stereotypical concept of gender as it has a large influence in discrimination and ignorance in black transgender and intersex issues and impacts in transgender and intersex lives. Black Transgender and Intersex people have had a multitude of troubles accessing medical assistance with their conditions in South Africa, mostly due to the scarcity of government institutions that are equipped to handle such issues. Transgender and Intersex Africa aim to offer training and workshops to academic institutions to better the current situation in terms of medical accessibility for transgender and intersex people.

Transgenderism and intersexuality have been ignored by many African people. This ignorance has affected many lives of Transgender and Intersex people and their families negatively. Transgenderism and intersexuality have been looked at as non African "disease” and as a result black transgender and intersex people are discriminated against and their human rights are often violated due to their gender expression. In most cases African society still confuses gender identity with sexual orientation. Many black transgender and intersex people do not have knowledge about terminologies and language that are available to describe their gender expression, hence this organisation is going to tackle issues regarding language and culture differences and bring knowledge and understanding about transgender and intersex expression in rural areas and black townships.
