Sweden – a “no-go” for transgender ?
During the 3rd European Transgender Council in Malmo where around 250 transactivsts and their allies were meeting, our Turkish comrades from Lambda Istanbul and Pink Life were victims of hate crimes and abuse by a gang of youths and suffered transphoic attacks of violence on the night of Thursday the 30th of September and on the follwoing night our friends and guests at the Malmo Council 2010 were harassed in the Crown Nightclub on Amiralsgatan in Central Malmo.
But the worst part of this is the rude, racist, transphobic and ignorant manner which our comrades experienced from the Malmo Police Department which was reported earlier.
Yesterday Saturday the 2nd of October the Rainbow parade highlighted the transpobic attacks. Last evening at 11.00 pm our Turkish activists supported by Transgender Europe (TGEU) and RFSL among others staged a protest demonstration outside the Crown Nightclub against the transphobia shown by the nightclub in general and by the SWEDISH POLICE in particular.
The attitude of the police was critisized by the acting mayor of Malmo, Mr. Kjell-Arne Landgren earlier on Staturday evening at the City of Malmos reception for the delegates and guests of the 3rd European Transgender Council at the city’s town hall, Radhuset.
Mr.Landgrten expressed his concern and anger against the attitude of the police and the attitude of some of Malmo’s inhabitants and appologised for this on behalf of the City of Malmo.
The demonstration at Crown Nightclub received good coverage in the local media.
Dear friends and guests, there can never be any acceptance of transhopia and we transpeople must have the basic human right of safety and to live our lives in dignity and freedom and not to be harrased by transphobic mobs and met by ingnorant, xenophobic, transphobic and racist members of the very people who should protect us, the police themselves.
In solidarity,
Ms. Maria Sundin
Member of the board RFSL
