… oder, "Was geht mich Amerika an?". Das ist die Frage die Sie sich vielleicht gestellt haben, beim Lesen des Titels. Ich darf Ihnen sagen: VIEL. Denn die schlechte Behandlung von Transgender-Menschen ist allgegenwärtig. Die Ungleichbehandlung zieht sich wie ein "rosa Faden" durch die verschiedenen Gesetzgebungen. Daher rate ich Ihnen die Story dennoch zu lesen.

"The cover story in the current issue of the The New Republic, "Welcome to America’s Next Great Civil Rights Struggle," is all about the movement for transgender rights, the progress we’ve been making and the hard work we’ve still got ahead of us.

The article tells the story of one woman’s transition against the backdrop of the movement for transgender rights. The cover model is none other than our very own Sam Berkeley, one of the plaintiff’s in TLDEF’s groundbreaking lawsuit challenging New York City’s practice of requiring transgender people to undergo surgery before it will issue them birth certificates with corrected sex designations.

Indeed, the article is accompanied by a beautiful photo gallery and set of interviews with a virtual "who’s-who" of the TLDEF family. Entitled, "Breaking Boundaries," the gallery features interviews with Staff Attorney Noah Lewis, board members Stephanie Battaglino, Terry Cummings, and Pauline Park, 6th Anniversary Benefit host Laverne Cox, our friends Margaret Stumpp and Jillian Weiss, and current and former interns Milo Primeaux, Stevie Tran, and Mari Rosenberger.
